Getting an Agent

Its early days for me, just starting out as a screenwriter but im curious as to how the movie business works.
Im guessing that you need an agent to represent you, to find directors to back your screenplay and what not, how do you go about getting one? Do you just look in a trade magazine and ring them up? Ask if they are interested in representing you?

'screenwriting' by raymond g frensham (isbn 0-340-60378-x, hodder&stoughton 1996) is proving to be a well concieved re-read. it just might put me off writing that screenplay ;-)

It's early days for me as well. The hardest thing is getting someone to actually read your stuff. Best advice is to just keep doing whatever you do - keep writing. Try and get your stuff out there.
